THIRD MAINLAND BRIGDE AND LAGOS TRAFFIC
Third mainland bridge was completed by President Ibrahim Babangida government in 1990.Though the phase one of the project was commissioned by President Shehu Shagari in 1980.After Nigeria's civil war in the 70’s, there was an increase in oil price and Nigeria went through series of economic improvements. During those days the capital city of Lagos was going through a period of port congestion which called for improved infrastructural facilities.Several vehicular traffics created the impetus for a third bridge which links the commercial-oriented Lagos Island with the growing urban communities of people on the mainland.Third Mainland Bridge was the longest bridge in Africa until 1996 when the 6th October Bridge located in Cairo was completed.
Looking back at the reason that propelled the necessity of the construction of the third mainland bridge which is traffic congestions. It’s now 32years that the bridge was completed by the era of President Ibrahim Babangida government. The traffic gridlock in Lagos continues to increase without any solution in the future. At least by now Lagos transportation system or Nigeria at large should have been upgraded to faster lists of transportation systems like subways, ports, airports trains, highways and waterways.
Nigerians we are at the brink of electing another president with other political posts competitors. Let’s make sure everyone get his or her PVC to vote in the right people.
