5 Docked For Murder Of Boko Haram Leader

Five serving police officers were on Tuesday arraigned by the Federal Government before Justice Donatus Okorowo of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for allegedly killing the leader of the Boko Haram sect, Malam Mohammed Yusuf and some of his followers.   One of the accused persons hiding his face. They were arraigned on fresh charges of terrorism and extra-judicial killing allegedly committed in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital on 30 July, 2009. They are Assistant Commissioner of Police, John G. Abang, Assistant Commissioner of Police M. A. Akeera, Chief Superintendent of Police Mohammed Ahmadu, Assistant Superintendent of Police Madu Buba and Sergeant Adamu Gado. SINGLE TERM: Nigerians split over Jonathan’s proposal

IN torrents, mixed reactions yesterday continued to trail President Goodluck Jonathan’s proposal to initiate a bill for a single tenure for president and governors in the country beginning from 2015. Although, President Jonathan said he would not be a beneficiary, the proposal drew opponents and  supporters  in equal measure from all parts of the country. It got a strident kick from leading opposition parties and platforms in the country such as the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP),  Patriotic Alliance for Nigeria (PAN), Civil Liberties Organisation  and Transition Monitoring Group (TMG). Conversely, The Patriots, Afenifere and Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) endorsed the proposal, saying that it could make way for good governance in the country. Three die, 10 houses burnt as tanker crashes in Enugu

The burning tanker No fewer than three charred bodies have so far been recovered from an early morning fire that started from a fallen oil tanker close to the Enugu Prisons in Enugu. The fire, which involved a truck with registration number XT 968 JJJ (Lagos), started at about 7am. A Deputy Police Commissioner, Mr. Stephen Ekpei, who was at the scene, confirmed the deaths to the News Agency of Nigeria. He denied rumours that the fire was the handiwork of  Boko Haram. ”There is no bomb scare in Enugu. It was just a tanker load of diesel that fell and eventually ignited a fire,” he said. Ekpei advised residents of the coal city to get about their normal business as the situation was under control. One Aide Killed 5 Suspect Armed Robbers invaded the home of Ajegunle Soldier,  John Odafe Asiemo  popularly known as  Daddy Showkey  on Tuesday July 26, 2011. One of his aides named Wale Suraj was killed in the ordeal. The strange robbers who arrived the Bola Street, Victory Estate home of Showkey at about 1.30pm, on a motor bike otherwise known as okada, and gained entrance through the main gate when Showkey’s first son,  Raymond Asiemo , who went on an errand, was about entering the house. Pastor Tunde Bakare, Vice-Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) at the April, 2011 presidential election, Pastor Tunde Bakare has  dismissed insinuations that the introduction of Islamic banking was aimed at Islamising Nigeria, saying such an assumption was misplaced. His call, however, came on a day the Special Adviser to Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State on Religious Matters (Christian), Rev. Joseph Hayab explained that the reason Christians opposed the introduction of Islamic banking was because some mischievous politicians, especially in the north, could take advantage of the situation to organise thugs to compel their state governors to deposit state funds with the bank.
